The Sunnah of Aqeeqah: Explained by Mufti Saheb

Q: Can Mufti Saheb please explain the sunnat of serving the Aqeeah meat. It has become quite common to have Aqeeqah braais and meals. Is it a Sunnat to do this? If not, is it something we should avoid? What is the actual Sunnah regarding Aqeeqah?

A: The same law that applies to the Qurbaani meat applies to the aqeeqah meat i.e. one third can be given in charity, one third for family and friends and one third consumed by one’s immediate family. Having a braai with the aqeeqah meat should not be regarded as a must. If one has a braai occasionally calling family and friends, then there will be no problem.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
