Understanding Zawal Time: Start, Duration, and Quran Recitation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What is zawal time? How much time before zohar Salaah does it start? Is there any zawal time before maghrib? If someone is reading/reciting Quran Sharif and zawal time commences, does he have to stop reading?

A: Zawaal refers to the time where the sun moves away from the zenith. When the sun is at the zenith (waqt ul istiwaa) it is impermissible to perform Salaah, however reciting the Qur’an is permissible.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
