Can I Marry My Cousin?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am engaged to the daughter of the sister of my father. In my child hood, mother of my father used to put her breast nipple in my mouth, whenever I cried. She was old then and had no milk in her breast. What I want to ask is it halal to marry with my cousin now?

A: If you have a doubt that just one drop may have entered your mouth then you should not make nikaah. However, if you are absolutely certain that not even a single drop had entered your system then it is permissible for you to make nikaah.

Q: My grand mom is not alive now. She was very old when I was in cradle. I don’t know whether old ladies have milk in breast. I must be very clear in my question. I am engaged to my cousin. my mother was telling me that when I was in the cradle my paternal grand mom used to do that to make me not cry. My mother says that she didn’t have milk at that time. My family is not taking it serious. Tell me if it is a serious issue. Please guide me how can I convince my family if this marriage is prohibited?

A: If your mother says that there was no milk and your predominant thought is that there was no milk that was drunk then you may marry your cousin. Otherwise, if you are still in doubt then it is best to refrain.
