Struggling with TV after graduating from madrasa: Seeking advice.

Q: I used to hate TV when I just came from madrasa after graduating. Alhamdulilla for around 2 years I wasn’t inclined towards it although the TV used to be on but I don’t know what has happened that its been a few weeks I have started watching some Hindi plays. I feel very bad inwardly but I don’t know why I can’t do anything. After watching I feel so guilty and I tell myself that I won’t watch again. I even make dua but I don’t know what happens when night reaches. I just go and sit in the sitting room and start watching. Please advise me.

A: In order for one to be successful or achieve any goal in life (whether worldly or Deeni related), one is required to show determination and courage. Without determination and the necessary effort one will not succeed in reaching his goal. Consider the evil consequences in the grave as well as in the hereafter on account of being involved in this grave sin. It appears in the Hadith that in the manner a person leads his life that is how he will pass away and leave this world, and the manner he passes away he will be resurrected on the day of Qiyaamah. Imagine if you are sitting before the television and the angel of death comes to take your soul. The television is one of the primary tools of shaitaan. Throughout the world religious, moral and social values have been drastically eroded by this tool. One is hyped towards sin and enticed towards immorality through viewing na mahram men and women. Over and above, pictures of animate objects and music are the main theme in most of the movies and films produced. Music and producing pictures of animate objects have been severely condemned in the Ahaadith. In regard to music and pictures of animate objects Nabi (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has said:

“There will be a group in my ummat who will regard zinaa (fornication), the use of silk (for men), consuming liquor and the use of musical instruments as permissible. The divine punishment of Allah Ta’aala will rain upon them from the skies, which will transform them into apes and swines.

إن أشد الناس عذابا عند الله يوم القيامة المصورون (صحيح البخاري 2/880 ، صحيح لمسلم 2/201)

Those involved in picture-making will be subjected to the worst forms of punishment on the day of Qiyaamat. (Bukhari 2/880, Muslim 2/201)

You should sincerely repent to Allah Ta’ala for this sin and make a firm resolve that you will not repeat it in the future.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
