Passing a bottle of attar (perfume) on Fridays

Q: Is there any significance is passing a bottle of attar (perfume) on Fridays (just before the Jumah salaat is about to commence) from person to person and each person rubs a drop or two of the attar on the face, hands and clothing? At most mosques this practice appears to have become customary.

A: Applying itr on the Mubaarak day of Jumu’ah is a mubaarak sunnah of Rasulullah Hence, it is permissible to share one’s itr with others provided one is particular about the Aadaab of the Musjid and one refrains from sharing itr while the khutba is being delivered. However, one should not regard this as a sunnah practise on the day of Jumu’ah. Similarly one should not impose on people to accept the itr as certain people are sensitive towards certain types of itr.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
