Selling adult related items online

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: We are a group of Muslim brothers/sisters thinking of starting an online web shop for Muslim married couples with halal permissible things. We would like to know about what are permissible selling items and what are not. Is it permissible to sell lubricants, condoms, massage oil, aphrodisiacs, enhancers (delay creams, gel, herbal pills and drinks etc.), condoms, bedroom game items (bondage, games, role play), lingerie and sex toys such as clitoris stimulator, penis ring, erotic jewelery (nipple and clitoris play), adult novelty, Kegel and Pelvic exercisers and massage vibrating items for external body use?

Bismillaah

A: Islam encourages hayaa (modesty). In fact, it declares hayaa and modesty as an integral part of faith. When hayaa and modesty leave, it is not difficult for Imaan to leave. Hence it is recorded in the books of Hadeeth: “When shame and hayaa leave then you may do as you please.”

Firstly these types of toys are not to be encouraged. Moreover, for a Muslim to be selling these items in spite of whatever good intentions he has it is really disgusting and disrespectful. One who has this type of a shop is then despised and looked down upon. He isn’t given the type of respect that a decent Muslim should be given.

Secondly, if his growing up children get to know that he is selling this type of items they also lose respect for their elders or alternately they begin to use these things freely or openly.

Thirdly, these toys are used more by unmarried people and unscrupulous people. We humbly request you to invest your energies in something that is going to be more beneficial and productive for the ummat that may enhance their Islamic values and guide them to their real goals in life.
