Should one raise his hands in dua when seeing the Ka’bah Shareef?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: When one sees the Ka’bah Shareef for the first time (whether in one’s life or when one travels to Makkah Mukarramah and sees the Ka’bah Shareef the first time), should one raise his hands in dua or not?

Bismillaah

A: There are two opinions in the Hanafi mazhab in regard to this mas’alah. The first opinion is that one should raise his hands, and the second opinion is that one should not raise his hands in dua when seeing the Ka’bah Shareef. Both these opinions are based on two different Ahaadith regarding raising or not raising the hands when seeing the Ka’bah Shareef.

The great Muhaddith, Mullah Ali Qaari (rahimahullah), has reconciled between both these opinions in this manner that one should raise his hands in dua the first time one sees the Ka’bah Shareef. Thereafter, whenever one goes to perform tawaaf or make umrah, one should not raise his hands in dua. This reconciliation conforms to the Hadith of Sunanul Kubra of Imaam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) wherein it is recorded that upon seeing the Ka’bah Shareef for the first time, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) raised his hands in dua. However, it is not proven in the Ahaadith that every time Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) saw the Ka’bah Shareef, he raised his hands in dua.

Therefore, when one travels to Makkah Mukarramah, then upon seeing the Ka’bah Shareef for the first time, one may raise his hands and make dua.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
