Person saying “I don’t want to be a Muslim anymore”

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If somebody says “I don’t want to be a Muslim anymore” when very angry but in their heart there’s belief, did they apostate?

Bismillaah

A: This is an extremely serious sin which he has committed. He should sincerely repent to Allah Ta’ala for this major sin and make a firm resolve that he will not repeat the sin in the future. He should inform all the people who were present that he has repented from his sin and that he is a believer.

As a precaution, he should repeat the kalimah and if he is married, he should perform his nikaah again with his spouse with a separate mahr.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
