Following the laws of the country one is residing in

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q:

1. Do I have to follow the secular laws of a country?

2. If I don’t follow the secular laws of a country, would I be sinful?

Bismillaah

A:

1. Those that do not conflict with your deen, like the of driving of a car on one side of the road then you may practise it.

2. To put yourself into problems and difficulties is not appropriate. For example, you defy some law, like speeding and you get a fine or are imprisoned. Then this is not at all right for a Muslim.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
