Do I Need to Follow a Madhab in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: When I learnt about Islam as far as I remember I was never told about which madhab or Islamic law I should follow, do I need to follow one or it doesn’t matter, also how do decide when you have a basic understanding of Islam?

Bismillaah

A: All our ulama are in agreement that you should follow one, preferably the mazhab that people in your town follow.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
