Missing salaah due to college

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My parents are forcing me to miss Salah for Education. Is it correct! I am admitted to a college where I am not allowed to pray salah. I am missing Asr and Maghrib Salah every day. On complaining this to my parents they are not listening to me and forcing me to go to the same college. I am not allowed to pray at my college or go out of the college. Every day I am praying Asr and Maghrib Salah at night after Isha Salah as Qaza Salah.

Is it correct that I miss Salah for Education? Should I obey my parents? They are blackmailing me emotionally. Should I change my college?

Bismillaah

A: Salaah is the most important pillar of Islam. The first thing a person will be questioned on the day of Qiyaamah will be in regard to salaah. Severe grave warnings have been sounded in the Qur’an and Ahaadith for the one who forgoes his Salaah. Missing salaah due to being engaged in acquiring worldly education is a major sin. You should make sincere tawba to Allah Ta’ala for missing your salaah and in future ensure that you perform all your salaah on their prescribed times. If the college does not allow you to perform your salaah on it’s time , then you should not acquire education in such a college. One should not obey one’s parents if they instruct one to disobey Allah Ta’ala. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said there is no obedience to the creation in matters where they command you to disobey Allah Ta’ala.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
