Q: I have recently started alimah classes and am halfway through with my hifz. Alhamdulillah, due to the Deeni knowledge that I have been exposed to, I have become more conscious of Allah and I began to worry that my imaan was too weak. I want to strengthen my Imaan.
There are two main things that I am doing that worry me. I watch tv and read a lot of romance novels. I have tried, but I can’t stop both at once.
Can Mufti Saheb inform me of which is worse, so that I can concentrate on that first?
A: Engage in muraaqabah-e-maut daily for about 10 – 15 minutes. This means to contemplate, to think about the oncoming event of maut (death). Reflect about the pangs of death, the questioning in the grave, the Plain of Resurrection, the Reckoning in Qiyamat; the presence in the Court of Allah; crossing the Sirat, etc. All this has to be contemplated and a pledge is to be made that one will in future not venture near to sin. Reflect in this way that it is now the last few moments of your life and the angels of death are coming to extract your soul. How will you feel at that moment and how your soul will depart from your body. Reflect over how ghusl will be given to your lifeless body, and how you will be lowered into the grave, all alone, with nobody around you except for your deeds. In this way reflect over death and the events thereafter. May Allah Ta`ala grant us all the ability to refrain from His disobedience.
