Mistakenly Performing Four Rakaats in Maghrib Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I did not sit for qa’dah in the third rakaat of Magrib and I went straight into a fourth rakaat. I completed the rakaat and then made Sajdah Sahw. I was a munfarid. What is the status of the salaah?

Bismillaah

A: The fard of Maghrib is three rakaats. Since you performed four rakaats and did not sit for qadah after the third rakaat, the salaah became a nafil salaah and the fard salaah did not take place. Hence, you will have to repeat your fard salaah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
