Different levels of guidance

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it correct to say that guidance is actually from Allah Ta’ala alone, and that when the Prophets gave us guidance, they themselves did not guide us, but it is Allah Ta’ala who guided us? Also, is it mentioned in the Quran that Allah Ta’ala told the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), “It is not you who guides them, it is Allah who guides”?

Bismillaah

A: When the word ‘guidance’ is used then it has different shades of meaning. One is delivering the message of Allah Ta`ala. In this respect, the Ambiyaa (alayhimus salaam) had given guidance. The other level is taufeeq and the grace of Allah Ta’ala to do good. This is entirely the work of Allah Ta’ala.

And Allah Ta`ala knows best
