Unconventional Muslim Nikah: Are They Legally Married?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My friend did nikah with her boyfriend. Both are Muslims. But they did not go to any qazi and their parents were also absent. It took place in front of two Muslim men. The boy said “mein Fatima ko apne nikah Mein kabool karta hoon”. She also said “kabool hain” just one time. Witnesses were adult Muslims. Are they husband and wife?

Bismillaah

A: The nikaah is valid but they should inform their parents and announce it.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
