Difference between prediction and fortune telling

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is future telling haraam in Islam? There is a great personality in history, Shah Naimutullah wali who predicted the future of the subcontinent and it came true.

Bismillaah

A: The prediction that has been prohibited is that which is speculation, guesswork and shaytaanic whispers and suggestions. This is not his prediction. Perhaps it was some dream that he had and he was just relating what he had seen. Like many a times before a person’s death some person has a dream indicating to the death. So this is not called a prediction.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
