Benefiting from insurance payouts

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am working in a shipping company. My company is giving 3 lakhs insurance coverage. I am not paying any money for the insurance. Can I take this money for hospitalisation or other purposes?

Bismillaah

A: Insurance is haraam due to the elements of interest and gambling being found in it. If the company is giving you this money as part of your salary and suggesting that you use it for insurance, then since the money belongs to you, you may use it for whatever permissible needs you have.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
