Performing four tashahhuds in a three rakaat salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I caught Maghrib Salaah in the 1st tashahud and on completing salaah I realized that I have completed 4 tashahud in a 3 rakaah salaah. Was this correct? If not, do I need to make Qazaa?

Bismillaah

A: The salaah is valid. If one joins the imaam in the first tashahud, then when the Imaam completes the salaah, he would have completed one rakaat and sat for two tashahuds. He will stand up and perform another rakaat and then sit again for the third tashahhud. Since he has only completed two rakaats of the salaah, he will have to perform the last rakaat and sit once more in tashahhud. In this way he will perform three rakaats and four tashahhuds.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
