Understanding “Makrooh” in Islamic Law: Is it Sinful and How Does it Differ from “Haram”?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: In several answers you use the word “makrooh”, for example in the answer to the question “Omitting a Surah in-between two Surahs”. Can you please clarify what you mean with “makrooh”. Is it sinful to do a “makrooh” act as a one off? If so, what is the difference between “makrooh” and “haram”?

Bismillaah

A: Sometimes the word makrooh is to show that this is not the preferred way, though not sinful. And sometimes it refers to something sinful when the word makrooh tahreemi is used. Leaving a surah is from the first category.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
