The Power of Promises: Do They Hold the Same Weight as Oaths?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is a strong promise the same as an oath? If someone makes a firm intention not to do something (word usage is promise) then if they break the promise do they have to give kafarah?

Bismillaah

A: A promise is totally different to an oath. The laws are not the same. It is compulsory to fulfil one’s promise morally and ethically.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
