Returning money that was taken from someone

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: In my youth money was taken from a family member. The money was meant to be given to the poor. I am not sure of the amount and I don’t have the means or the money to give back. I am afraid that my relationship with the family member will drift apart if I come forward with what I did. Please advice what to do.

Bismillaah

A: Better than that, they should give the equivalent in cash as a gift.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
