Zakaat and optional charity

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My question is that from our earnings, what persentage we need to give for charity for the sake of Allah Ta’ala?

Bismillaah

A: Once in the lunar year you will give out 2.5 percent to the poor and needy Muslims and this is called zakaat. Over and above zakaat, the other charities are of an optional nature; you may give to whoever you wish and however you wish provided it is an amount that is easily sustained.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
