Giving Up Novels for Allah: A Year Later, My Struggle Continues

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I once went through something in my life and I promised Allah that I would give up something dear to me i.e. I would never read novels again if He removes that problem. It has been a year since and I have not broken the vow but I find it very difficult and I find myself just wasting the time away. What must I do as I am very confused?

Bismillaah

A: It is not permissible for you to break your vow. If you break your vow, you will be sinful. You should not waste your time. Time is a great ni’mat of Allah Tala. You should appreciate this great nimat and make a habit of reciting Quraan and doing good deeds (e.g. making zikr, engaging in istighfaar, reciting durood shareef, etc.).

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
