Mistakenly calling a Muslim a kaafir

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I said that a certain person is kafir without knowing that he is Muslim. I thought that he was a kafir. He is unaware that I said that he was a Kafir. What to do?

Bismillaah

A: If you had mistook him to be a kaafir due to him not having any sign of Islaam on him e.g. a beard, topi or kurta then you will not be sinful. However, in future you should be more cautious.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
