Making enquiries regarding the aqaaid of the person one wishes to marry

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am engaged but I am unclear about the boys deeni committments. I think he doesn’t know much about deen as he says that he is a simple Muslim and thats it. Can you please guide me as to what questions should my family ask him in order for the the nikah to be valid? Is it necessary to question his aqaaid if he offers namaaz?

Bismillaah

A: When choosing a life partner, the Hadith teaches us that apart from basing one’s choice on beauty and good looks, one should look at the level of Deen in the person one wishes to marry. If one finds the person to be from a pious family and the person also is pious, possessing good character and committed to Deen and one finds the person to be compatible to one in other aspects, then one should marry such a person. Your parents should make the necessary enquiries regarding the boys level of commitment to Deen, aqaaid, akhlaaq, company, etc.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
