Spending on Aashura: Who Should Benefit According to Hadith?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: In the Hadith regarding increasing your spending on Aashura, does it only refer to a man spending on his wife and children, or does it also include the wife spending on her husband and children or the children spending on their parents?

Bismillaah

A: The hadith encourages one to spend on his family. Generally, the father is the one who spends on his family and fulfils their needs. Hence the hadith refers to the father spending on his family. However, since mention is made of spending on the family, if the members of the family who are living together spend on each other and keep it among themselves, it will be permissible. Perhaps the father will spend on his family through earning the wealth and the mother will contribute by cooking the food and feeding the family.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
