Responsibilities of a man towards his wife and children

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What are the islamic obligations or duties of a husband towards his wife, and a father towards his children, and when does a husband/father cease to be bound by these duties.

Bismillaah

A: A husband needs to see to the clothing, housing and feeding of his wife, and the satisfying of her physical needs. He is also required to attend to her proper deeni guidance and educate her accordingly.

A father’s duty to his children is to ensure that they are given the proper deeni education and imbued with true islamic values and character. He is also responsible for seeing to their worldly needs in form of clothing, shelter and food etc.

The husband remains responsible for the wife for as long as she remains obedient to him by not leaving the home without his permission, satisfying him when he requires her to do so, etc.

A father’s responsibility to his children’s worldly needs remains until the son is able to fend for himself and until the daughter marries.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
