Did I Bet with My Friend for a Treat?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Me and my friend were diacussing about marks of a certain exam and my friend said “I won’t get more than 20 marks”. I said to him “You will get more than 20 marks”. He said to me “If I get more than 20 marks I will give you a treat”. When results came out he scored more than 20 marks. Is it permissible for me to take a treat from my friend. Is it counted as betting/gambling?

Bismillaah

A: It is not compulsory upon him, however it is permissible for him. Since this was not two sided (i.e. if he gets less than 20 marks, then you will have to give him a treat), it will not be regarded as gambling.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
