Q: If a woman is ill, is it permissible for her to go to a male doctor for treatment? If permissible, then can she expose her body before the male doctor?
A: Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (Rahmatullahi Alayh) has written in Baheshti Zewar, that if a woman requires medical treatment, she should go to a Muslim female doctor. If she is unable to find a qualified Muslim female doctor to treat her, then she should refer to a non-muslim female doctor. If a non-muslim female doctor is not available, then she may refer to a Muslim male doctor. If there are no Muslim male doctors available, then as a last resort, she may go to a non-muslim male doctor. In the situation where a woman is forced to visit a male doctor for treatment, she should ensure that she does not remain in seclusion with the doctor at any time. As far as a woman exposing her body before a male doctor is concerned, then she should only expose that part of her body which requires medical treatment. Other parts of her body should not be exposed and extreme caution should be exercised in this regard.

(وكذا مريد نكاحها) ولو عن شهوة بنية السنة لا قضاء الشهوة (وشرائها ومداواتها ينظر) الطبيب (إلى موضع مرضها بقدر الضرورة) إذ الضرورات تتقدر بقدرها وكذا نظر قابلة وختانوينبغي أن يعلم امرأة تداويها لأن نظر الجنس إلى الجنس أخف.
قال الشامي: (قوله وينبغي إلخ) كذا أطلقه في الهداية والخانية. وقال في الجوهرة: إذا كان المرض في سائر بدنها غير الفرج يجوز النظر إليه عند الدواء، لأنه موضع ضرورة، وإن كان في موضع الفرج، فينبغي أن يعلم امرأة تداويها فإن لم توجد وخافوا عليها أن تهلك أو يصيبها وجع لا تحتمله يستروا منها كل شيء إلا موضع العلة ثم يداويها الرجل ويغض بصره ما استطاع إلا عن موضع الجرح اهـ فتأمل والظاهر أن ” ينبغي ” هنا للوجوب (رد المحتار 6/370)
والطبيب إنما يجوز له ذلك إذا لم يوجد امرأة طبيبة فلو وجدت فلا يجوز له أن ينظر لأن نظر الجنس إلى الجنس أخف وينبغي للطبيب أن يعلم امرأة إن أمكن وإن لم يكن ستر كل عضو منها سوى موضع الوجع ثم ينظر ويغض ببصره عن غير ذلك الموضع إن استطاع لأن ما ثبت للضرورة يتقدر بقدرها (البحر الرائق 8/352)
