Breaking a Promise to Allah: Kafara or Forgiveness?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: 10 days ago I made a promise with Allah not to smoke for the whole month but then I did! I broke my promise! What will be kafara? Can I just ask for forgiveness or do I have to do a kafara? Secondly, I want to keep carrying on smoking. I dont want to carry on with this promise! What can I do? I was too stupid to even make a promise like this!

Bismillaah

A: The kaffarah for breaking an oath is that one feeds 10 poor people two meals or gives them the amount of sadaqatul fitr (i.e. each poor person should be given the amount of sadaqatul fitr) or clothes them with such clothing with which one is able to perform Salaah in it. If one is unable to fulfill this, then one should fast for three days consecutively with the intention of atoning for the broken oath.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
