Placing a musalla on an impure carpet and performing Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q:

1. If I place a clean musalla on an impure carpet can I pray on that musalla?

2. Also, if I make wudhu and then stand with my wet feet on the musalla that is on the impure carpet will the musalla become impure since the water penetrates the musalla and goes to the carpet or will it be pure. Because I heard a masala that if you wrap a wet impure cloth inside another cloth the other cloth won’t become impure.

Bismillaah

A:

1. Yes.

2. The mas’lah explained by the fuqaha which you are referring to is in the case where an impure damp cloth was placed under a musalla, and the dampness of the cloth penetrates through the musalla. In such a case, the Salaah of the one performing Salaah on the musalla will not be valid as he will be making sajdah on the napaak dampness. As far as the little wetness on your feet is concerned, it will be confined to your musalla on account of it being a few droplets of water. Even if it penetrates through the musalla and reaches the napaak carpet at the bottom, since the carpet was dry and the exact spot of napaaki on the carpet was not known, the Salaah will be valid. However, if the entire carpet was damp with napaak water and it penetrated through the musalla, then the Salaah will not be valid.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
