Difference between God and Lord

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What is the difference between God and Lord and which one should be believed in Islam? For example, there is no god but Allah. In the above case BUT is used not EXCEPT can you elaborate it please mufti Saab?

Bismillaah

A: The word Lord is generally used for the head of a people, town or community. Like you say the Lord Mayor of London. Since this word is used for people, it will not be appropriate to use it for Allah. The word God is exclusive to the creator and Allah. Hence, it has a different connotation.
In usage, the words But and Except are about the same. There may be a technical difference but the general usage is for the same purpose.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
