Engagement and Nikah in Islam: Requirements and Guidelines

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is engagement allowed in Islam? Can we do engagement and then nikaah after a period of one year or more? Can we meet each other without performing nikaah. Is nikaah essential for making relationship with each other.

Bismillaah

A: There is no basis for engagements.

When the spouse has been found then it is totally against the sunnat to delay and postpone the marriage.

It is haraam.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
