Looking after one’s mother and mother in-law

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My question is in Islam is it obligatory for a person to look after his mum or mother in-law?

Bismillaah

A: To look after the mother is compulsory. Looking after the mother in law is an act of virtue though not compulsory. Yes, if she has no one to look after her then it becomes compulsory to take care of her.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
