Witr Salaah: Different Ways and Niyah for Praying Two Rakaah and One Rakaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Can you please brief me on the different ways to praying witr salaah? and what is the niyah we make for the first two rakaah when we pray two rakah then one rakaah witr. Moreover, is it okay after returning to standing form (after ruku) we raise our hand reciting Dua Qunut and make dua.

Bismillaah

A: We know just one way. Make the niyyat of 3 rakaats witr salaah. After the second rakaat, sit in qa`dah and upon completing the tashahhud stand up to complete the third rakaat. When you complete the qiraat raise the hands and say the takbeer. Thereafter, recite the qunoot and once you complete it proceed to ruku and complete the salaah as normal.

You do not need to make two separate niyyats. One is sufficient for all three rakaats.

According to us, in the qunoot the hands are not supposed to be raised when making dua.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
