Can the janazah Salaah be performed in the Musjid?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q:

1. Can the janazah Salaah be performed in the Musjid. In Makkah and Madinah it is performed.

2. If the sehen area is full can the lines extend into the masjid?

Bismillaah

A:

1. According to the Hanafi and Maaliki mazhab, Janaazah Salaah should not be performed in the Musjid. The Hadith has prohibited performing the Janaazah Salaah in the Musjid. However, the Shafi’ee and Hambali Mazhab hold the view that performing the Janaazah Salaah in the Musjid is permisisble. Since most of the people in Makkah Mukarramah and Madina Tayyibah follow the Hambali Mazhab, they perform the Janaazah Salaah in the Musjid.

2. They should refrain from allowing the saff to enter the Musjid. However, if there is a dire need due to space restrictions, then it will be permissible.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
