Keeping the name Mu’min

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Please advise why it is not advisable to keep “Mumin” name for new born son? Mu’min means believer.

Bismillaah

A: The fuqahaa have discouraged this. It will not be a pleasant sight if someone were to ask you, “Is Mumin here?” and you tell him that Mumin is not here. Won’t it be an unpleasant sight if someone has to take the meaning from a different perspective, as though you are saying that there is no person with imaan in the house.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
