Can Three Words Spoken in Drunkenness Result in Talaaq?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My father said the word talaaq three times in front of me while he was drunk. Will talaaq occur or not? Some say because it was three talaaqs said in the same time so talaaq doesn’t apply as it’s considered one time and also he was drunk. Some say a person can say two times talaaq at a single time and if he says 3 times then Talaaq will apply and it is independent of whether he was drunk or not and also my mother told me that my father also said talaaq on many occasions before but only one time or two but the last time he said three times. Please guide me!

Bismillaah

A: All the talaaqs have taken place. It is not halaal for your mother to live with him any longer.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
