Believing in a Specific Imam: Is it Required in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it necessary to believe in any one among the four Imams? Did the prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) mention anything about it?

Bismillaah

A: The imaams are not part of faith and imaan. It is compulsory for the person who does not know jurisprudence to refer to someone who knows it well. So to follow the one who knows it well is following the imaam because he knows it better than most of us.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
