Q: I want to ask what is the Islamic ruling when few families stay in one house. Is it prohibited in Islam? Please guide me in detail. I am married and I have my little brother with my father and mother. We are living together. How should purda be observed among the non-mahrams of the home?
A: It is permissible to live together. However purda should be observed within the home with all non-mahrams. The manner in which purda will be observed is that men and women of the home will eat separately. To avoid suspicion and doubts entering the minds, the non-mahram men of the home should avoid entering the private rooms of the women. As far as the common rooms of the home are concerned e.g. lounge, dining room, kitchen, etc., then it is permissible for all enter, however at the time when women are present in the room, then the non-mahram men of the home should avoid entering the room at that time and vice versa.

عن ابن عمر قال : خطبنا عمر بالجابية فقال يا أيها الناس إني قمت فيكم كمقام رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فينا فقال أوصيكم بأصحابي ثم الذين يلونهم ثم الذين يلونهم ثم يفشوا الكذب حتى يحلف الرجل ولا يستحلف ويشهد الشاهد ولا يستشهد ألا لا يخلون رجل بامرأة إلا كان ثالثهما الشيطان عليكم بالجماعة وإياكم والفرقة فإن الشيطان مع الواحد وهو من الاثنين أبعد من أراد بحبوحة الجنة فيلزم الجماعة من سرته حسنته وساءته سيئته فذلك المؤمن. عن علي أنه كان عند رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال أي شيء خير للمرأة فسكتوا فلما رجعت قلت لفاطمة أي شيء خير للنساء قالت لا يراهن الرجال فذكرت ذلك للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال إنما فاطمة بضعة مني رواه البزار وفيه من لم أعرفه (مجمع الزوائد #15200)
عن عقبة بن عامر : أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال إياكم والدخول على النساء فقال رجل من الأنصار يا رسول الله ! أفرأيت الحمو ؟ قال الحمو الموت (جامع الترمذي #1171)
