Oath vs. Promise: Kaffara Consequences for Breaking Them

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What is the difference between and oath and a promise? When we take and oath that I will never do such a sin again, if we go angaist an oath we give kaffra tell me if we make a promise with God that I will never do such a sin again, if we go angaist a promise should we give kaffara or not?

Bismillaah

A: An oath is where a person uses the words of qasam like “wallaahi” or “ahlifu billahi” etc. or words of a similar meaning in another language. If a person breaks the oath then kaffaarah is necessary. However, kaffaarah is not necessary when a person goes against his promise.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
