Verbalizing Promises to Allah: Is it Necessary for Validity?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: In order for a promise with Allah to be valid does the promise have to be said verbally, and what if a person doesn’t say it verbally but just says it in his head?

Bismillaah

A: Yes. This is in the case of a vow. However, in other situations the promise will be valid even if it is not verbal.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
