When Sujūd Al-Sahw Becomes Mandatory

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org

Question:

I am a bit confused regarding Sajda Al-Sahw (Prostration for a mistake in ritual prayer). I would be grateful if you could explain the correct way of observing it. Does Sajda Al-Sahw only apply to wājibāt (obligatory matters) missed during prayers or for other things also?

Answer:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Abū Bakr ibn Mas’ōd Al Kāsānī [d. 587H] has written in Badāiʾ Al Ṣanāiʾ, “The causes of Sajda Al-Sahw becoming mandatory are:

  1. To leave out a wājib practice in the prayer

  2. To alter a wājib practice’s position from its place

  3. To alter a far practice’s position from its place unintentionally

This is because all these factors cause deficiency in the prayer and hence amending it is required through sujūd.” [Badāiʾ Al Ṣanāiʾ p.691 vol.1, Abū Bakr ibn Mas’ōd Al Kāsāni, Dār Al Kotob Al Ilmīyah, Beirut Lebanon 1997]
