Classifying Income As Haraam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum respective Mufti Saheb and scholars,
My brother has been working for an insurance company for several years. Although he was told by an Aalim to quit once another job is found, he has not done so. I can’t say that he’s been actively searching for other work. He has a side business (filing income tax returns for people), but he still holds on to his other job. Lately he just bought a house so his revenue exceeds necessity for living. His wife is also working and has quite a good salary (I believe better than his). My question is regarding us dealing with him as long as part of his income is Haraam. We have been avoiding going to his house to avoid eating his food, but sometimes they come and offer gifts and food to my children (my husband says to return gifts but I find it hard to do; it is also hard to control my children as they are small and don’t understand. It’s a very difficult situation for us as we don’t want to cut ties with them yet we cannot visit them. My husband has tried explaining things to him but the situation stays the same. Even my mother gets mad at us and says that we are creating division and hatred within the family. What should we do? Please advice us clearly. Jazaakumullah Khair for your great help.

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.

It is difficult to decisively classify all the food and gifts of your brother as Haraam, since he has another source of income and his wife too earns a Halaal salary.
