Haraam Meat and Sea Creatures

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum! I’m a medical student and I’m living in a hostel. My parents live in another country and I’m here on my own for my studies.

As this is a non muslim country Halaal food is not available so I’m living on can food vegetables only) and fruits…or sea food as Halaal chicken ,mutton, beef is not available my 1st Question! is everything undersea means seafood Halaal including octopus, mussels, crabs, shark etc

2nd question! As I Alhamdulillah do not eat Haraam meat but some of my friends say tat thy asked an imam imam in Egypt he told them that they can eat chicken from here. like chicken sausages, pizza etc but I still don’t eat and find hard to believe I’ve told them before but it seems they didn’t like it so I don’t discuss about it with them anymore. I believe that if vegetarians can live without it so we should also try but vegetables are also not easily available as it is a cold place and most of the things are frozen.

will you please explain and answer my questions, thank you

According to the Hanafi school of thought, only fish (all sorts of fish including sharks and Wales) from amongst the sea creatures is Halaal and apart from this all other sea creatures are Haraam such as, octopus, muscles crabs etc. The meat of an animal is Halaal if the animal was slaughtered according to Shari’ah. The same ruling applies to chicken meat. If you are not certain with regards to the meat, whether it is Halaal or not, then you should not eat it. You should try and purchase live chickens and have them slaughtered yourself, observing the rules of Shari’ah.
