Usage of Gold and Silver Teeth

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Is it permissible for a male and female to have real gold and silver teeth and please explain why gold and silver is not allowed for males in Shari’ah?

Answer:

It has been unanimously agreed upon the permissibility of implanting silver teeth.  According to Imam Abu Hanifah (R.A.A.) if silver develops a stench in the mouth then gold will be permissible.  This ruling apparently will be the same for males and females.  (Fataawaa Mahmoodiyah, Vol. 5, Page 218, Fataawaa Rahimiyyah, Vol. 6, Page 273)

Leading an arrogant, boastful and luxurious life is prohibited in Shari’ah.  Boastfulness and arrogance is Haraam.  People who use gold and silver are categorised as affluent because gold and silver are precious metals.  In the primitive days, Roman and Iranian monarchs wore such jewellery and those who did not possess gold and silver were known as common people.  The usage of gold and silver utensils is prohibited for both males and females because of their qualities of creating pride and arrogance in one.  However, gold and silver is also used for adornment, jewellery is made from them and it is desired that the female adorns herself and not the male, since both of them are of different nature.  Females are a form of adornment and men use these adornments, females are soft by nature whereas males are stern and hardworking.  It is not permissible for either of them to imitate the other.

Considering their contrasting natures, females have been allowed to beautify themselves by adorning themselves with gold and silver and men are not allowed to do so because of their natural disposition.  In examining his lifestyle, he will only be allowed to use such a ring containing a specified amount of silver as a stamp.  (Ahkaam-e-Islam ‘Aql ke Nazar main, Moulana Ashraf ‘Ali Thanwi, Page 327)
