Taking Reward for Teaching Qur’an

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Dear Moulana Sahib Assalamualaikum,

Jazakallah for your help. Shukran Jazeelan.

Q.1. What is the ruling of the scholars about taking any sort of reward for reading or teaching Qur’an to somebody. For e.g. leading the Taraweeh Salaah.

Q.2. A lot of Ulamaa mention numerous incidents about Hazrat Moosa Alayhis Salaam. From where do they quote them? Are they authentic? Please elaborate

Answer:

  1. If the person leading the Taraweeh Salaah is the Imam of that Masjid then it will not be permissible for him to accept any form of reward from the public more than his normal salary.  Also, if the person leading Taraweeh is not the Imam then too it will not be permissible for him to accept any reward even though it may be forwarded as a gift. It will however be permissible to accept a wage for teaching the Holy Qur’an and not for merely reciting the Qur’an.  (Imdaadul Ahkaam)
  1. Many incidents of Moosa (A.S.) have been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an as well as the Ahadeeth. It will be appropriate if you could send us any specific incident on which you would like us to elaborate.
