Assalamualaikum

Q1-If a person has Depression and kills herself by cutting her throat is such a person Shaheed?  Please provide reference to answer.  ,Jazakumullah, Wassalaam

Answer:

Abu Hurairah (R.A.) narrates that the Prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Whosoever kills himself by jumping off the mountain he will be doing the same to himself in the fire of Hell for eternity and whosoever kills himself by consuming poison, he will be sipping the poison from his hand in the fire of Hell for eternity.  (Similarly) whosoever kills himself with a metal object he will be stabbing himself with that metal object in the fire of Hell for eternity”.  (Mishkaat, page 299, At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb, Vol. 3, Page 300)

Abu Hurairah (R.A.) also narrates that the Prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Whosoever strangles himself, he will be doing the same to himself in the fire and whosoever stabs himself to death, he will be doing the same to himself in the fire (of hell).  (Mishkaat, Page 299-300, At-Targheeb Wat-Tarheeb, Vol. 3, Page 300)

Jaabir bin Samurah (R.A.) narrates that a person after being afflicted with a wound, drew an arrow from his quiver and killed himself.  The Prophet (S.A.W) (on being informed of this) refused to perform Salaah on him. (At-Targheeb Wat-Tarheeb, Vol. 3, Page 300)

It is Haraam to commit suicide.  Such a person will not be a Shaheed.  The abovementioned Ahaadith narrated in this regard clearly state what punishment such a person will be liable for and the Prophet (S.A.W.)’s refusal to perform Salaatul Janazah for such a person also shows how grave this sin is.
