Mentioning names during Qurbani

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicPortal.co.uk

If an abattoir is slaughtering a cow on behalf of seven people, is it necessary to name each person at the point of slaughter or know all of their names?

Answer

It is not necessary to name the people during slaughter or know all of their names. Intention on their behalf or on behalf of the lead person is sufficient. However, the animal must be specified. A label or similar tagging system can be used by the abattoir to ensure that each animal is allocated in advance of slaughter to its owner(s) or the instructor. The abattoir must know who the animal belongs to, and therefore if on the tag, one name is written for identification purposes or a number that is cross referenced, this is sufficient.
