If a person has a routine of taking a shower each morning but does not make niyyah for ghusl nor does he gargle or pass water in the nostrils, does he need to make ablution separately for Fajr Ṣalāh or does the shower suffice?

Answer
The shower is sufficient if he is not in the state of ritual impurity.
Intention is not necessary for ghusl or ablution. Gargling and passing water in the nostrils is necessary for ghusl, not necessary in ablution. Therefore, he is not required to make ablution separately as long as he is not in the state of ritual impurity (janābah). If he is in the state of ritual impurity, his ghusl is incomplete until he gargles and passes water in his nostrils.
قال في الأصل (١/٤١): قلت: أرأيت رجلا توضأ ونسي المضمضة والاستنشاق أو كان جنبا فنسي المضمضة والاستنشاق ثم صلى؟ قال: أما ما كان في الوضوء فصلاته تامة. وأما ما كان في غسل الجنابة أو طهر حيض فإنه يتمضمض ويستنشق ويعيد الصلاة. قلت: من أين اختلفا؟ قال: هما في القياس سواء إلا أنا ندع القياس للآثر الذي جاء عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما. وقال (١/٥٣): إذا توضأ وأراد به الصلاة أو لم يرد به فإنه يجزيه من وضوئه. ألا ترى أن جنبا لو اغتسل وهو ناس للجنابة لا يريد بذلك غسل الجنابة أن ذلك يجزيه من غسل الجنابة، فكذلك هذا الذي توضأ ولا أبالي نوى به الغسل أو لم ينو، انتهى۔
